It’s time to start thinking about cool crop veggies!
Mid to late August is an ideal time for planting greens and root crops. Warm, late-summer days encourage good growth, while cooler nights bring out flavors in your fall crops. Look for cabbage, kale broccoli and several other greens for great cool crop options. If you’re low on space, you can easily grow them inside as they are shallow rooted. If you are planting outside, you’ll want to dig in two to three inches of compost to help improve your soil. Your summer vegetable crops will have depleted most of the nutrition in your soil, so adding fertilizer will keep your cool weather crops going strong. Make sure to keep a frost cloth handy for nights when cooler temps threaten your crops. This will extend your greens well into late fall.
